At 56 feet tall, “Kamal Kunj,” one of the largest Pichwai paintings in the world, is on display at NMACC

At 56 feet tall, “Kamal Kunj” is one of the biggest Pichwai paintings ever shown for public viewing at the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre (NMACC) in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex. The Reliance Foundation commissioned the work as a part of a larger effort to resuscitate the 400-year-old Pichwai art style, which originated in Nathdwara, Rajasthan.

Pichwai paintings are typically grand and exquisitely detailed hand-painted textile works of art that tell stories from Krishna’s life while showing him in various moods, body positions, and outfits.

The Shrinathji idol, an avatar of Krishna revered by the Vaishnavite sub-sect of the Pushtimargis, which houses the shrine, was customarily hanging behind them.

Pichwai paintings have developed a new function as wall art over the last century and are highly prized for their lively beauty.

Within the Jio World Centre, in the center of Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex, the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre is a groundbreaking, multidisciplinary arts facility.

Three performance venues can be found in the Cultural Centre: the imposing 2,000-seat Grand Theatre, the cutting-edge 250-seat Studio Theatre, and the exciting 125-seat Cube.

The Art House, a four-story specialized visual arts facility constructed in accordance with international museum standards with the goal of holding a variety of exhibitions and installations by the best creative talent across India and the globe, is another highlight of the Cultural Centre.

A dazzling assortment of public artwork by well-known Indian and international artists, including “Kamal Kunj,” is dispersed across its concourses.
