Chandigarh Municipality will remodel 14 roundabouts

Following the triumph of a test project meant to enhance traffic safety at crosswalks, the Municipal Corporation will redesign and outfit each of the twenty principal roundabouts with security cameras.

The company states that efforts are underway to revamp the other 14 large chowks, with six of the roundabouts having already undergone redesigns. Under the UT Administration, there are a number of significant chowks.

In an effort to mitigate the effect of potential traffic accidents, the MC has lowered the height of six roundabouts from over two feet to nine inches. These roundabouts have six-foot-wide paver bricks installed around them. The roundabouts’ geometry hasn’t altered in spite of the new design. According to authorities, paving around the chowks would guarantee commuter safety.

The six chowks were redesigned as part of an experimental project. The Road Safety Council’s suggestions were the basis for the makeover, according to MC authorities.

In addition, the municipal organization plans to install CCTV cameras at each of these intersections to provide efficient monitoring. At 47 intersections, the firm has already installed security cameras. As part of the makeover, these cameras will be installed in the remaining chowks.

For real-time monitoring, these cameras will be linked to Sector 17’s Integrated Command and Control Center (ICCC). Drunk drivers have often damaged chowks and then driven off. Through these cameras, we will be able to identify their registration numbers and pursue them for whatever losses we may have,” an official said.
