Congress Demands PM’s Presence In Manipur Debate, President’s Intervention

The administration was under fire from the Congress party on Friday for allegedly avoiding a serious discussion of the situation in Manipur. As Congress leaders wanted an in-depth conversation to address the disturbing occurrence involving the public attack of two women, the party urged President Droupadi Murmu’s involvement to remove the state administration.

Pramod Tiwari, the deputy leader of the Congress in the Rajya Sabha, spoke during a news conference there and attacked the administration for trying to make a brief discussion with time constraints into a simple formality. In contrast, the opposition sought a lengthy debate so that all parties, including the treasury benches, could voice their opinions. According to PTI, Tiwari pressed the administration to start the discussion on Monday morning and urged the Prime Minister to address the issue in Parliament.

President Droupadi Murmu was asked by Congress spokesman Pawan Khera to use her extraordinary powers to remove the Manipur government. In an apparent jab at the Prime Minister, Khera questioned why he hadn’t been to Manipur to call for peace and said that he didn’t follow “Rajdharma.” Rahul Gandhi, the head of the opposition, has previously been to Manipur and empathized with the suffering of the locals, Khera said.

On Twitter, Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh demanded that the Manipur Chief Minister resign immediately and that the Prime Minister address Parliament to allow for a full debate of the situation. He attacked the Prime Minister’s most recent remarks on Manipur as being irrelevant and skipping over the tragedy that has been raging in the state since May 3.

Pramod Tiwari, the deputy leader of the Congress, pushed for a discussion in the Rajya Sabha according to Rule 176, stressing the necessity for justice for the two abused women whose actions had brought disgrace upon the country. He said that the BJP was insensitive to the needs of women.
