Delhi Minister To LG: “Act Against Officers Responsible For Deaths Of Common Man”

Atishi, a member of the Delhi Cabinet, requested Lt. Governor V K Saxena to punish the officials whose carelessness resulted in the deaths of two individuals in separate instances at Harsh Vihar and LNJP Hospital on Sunday.

She said that the Center’s law on service control gives the LG the authority to act in this manner. “I would want to advise you to take urgent action against these negligent cops until the court’s ruling on this black ordinance comes. Two lives were lost as a result of their carelessness.

She addressed a letter to the LG stating, “You should break your silence and take action immediately, otherwise the people of Delhi will keep facing trouble like this.” She said that an elected administration must have the authority to reassign and suspend personnel and accused the LG of keeping a “silence” on the matter. Ajit Sharma, 51, was on his way home after dropping off a passenger in Bhajanpura in east Delhi on Friday when his autorickshaw became stranded in a wet ditch close to Wazirabad. He fell in the ditch and perished as he exited the car to push it.

On Sunday, a worker was electrocuted at a building that was still being built, according to the authorities. “In spite of these events, you remain mute. Two days have passed since an autorickshaw driver lost his life as a result of police’ incompetence, but you haven’t done anything about it or had the guts to speak out about it, she remarked.

The Delhi government filed a petition with the Supreme Court on Friday contesting the ordinance on service control’s validity, describing it as a “unconstitutional exercise of executive fiat” that seeks to “override” both the highest court and the Constitution’s fundamental principles. The Delhi administration has also asked for a temporary restraining order till the decision is made.

To establish a procedure for the transfer and posting of Group-A officials in Delhi, the Centre has enacted the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Ordinance, 2023, on May 19. The National Capital Civil Service Authority has been established to oversee transfers of and disciplinary actions against Group-A officers as a result of the ordinance, which was passed a week after the Supreme Court gave control of services in Delhi to the elected government, with the exception of police, public order, and land.
