Dhruva Jaishankar: PM Modi’s US visit would highlight the depth of India-US relations

According to Dhruva Jaishankar, Executive Director of Observer Research Foundation (ORF) America, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s first state visit to the US is noteworthy because it shows how extensive the two nations’ relationship has become.

“This is Prime Minister Modi’s first state visit to the US. The importance of this visit will be to illustrate how extensive the connection is and how India and the US are now addressing almost every major problem, according to Dhruva of ORF, who spoke to ANI.

“Hopefully, we will see some forward movement in defence co-production and trade in some critical areas that are very vital to Indian national security,” he said.

Dhruva’s comments were made as Modi touched down in the US on Tuesday for the first part of his first state visit to the country. During this trip, he will lead the festivities of International Yoga Day at the UN Headquarters and meet with President Joe Biden in person in Washington.

According to the executive director of the renowned think tank, India and the US share similar worries about China’s ascent and have experienced Chinese aggressiveness and worry about it.

It is clear that this is leading to closer US-Indian cooperation. Many aspects of Indian-US collaboration go place notwithstanding China, he said.

President Biden and First Lady Jill Biden, who will welcome him at a state banquet on June 22, have invited PM Modi to visit the US from June 21 to June 24. The prime minister will speak to a joint session of the US Congress on June 22 as part of the tour.

President Biden and the First Lady’s “special invitation” to him for a state visit, according to Modi’s farewell statement, reflects the vigor and vibrancy of the alliance between the two democracies.

On Tuesday, a senior White House official emphasized the significance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s historic visit to the US, stating that “this big week” is all about the bilateral relationship between India and the US and that the State Visit is also not about Russia and China.

The goal of the visit is to strengthen the bilateral relationship on its own basis, according to John Kirby, the White House National Security Council Coordinator for Strategic Communications, who was speaking at a news briefing.

It’s not about pressuring Prime Minister Modi or the Indian government to choose a different course of action. It’s about concentrating on where we are in this relationship and enhancing it moving ahead,” Kirby was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

This is a “big week” at the White House, according to a White House representative, as President Biden and the First Lady host the Prime Minister of India for an official State Visit and supper.

“This government has only hosted three such state dinners and visits. This visit will reaffirm the strong ties of family and friendship that unite Americans and Indians, as well as the long and close relationship between the US and India, Kirby was cited as saying by ANI.

“The visit will strengthen our two countries’ shared commitment to a free, open, prosperous, and secure Indo-Pacific as well as our shared resolve to elevate our strategic technology partnership, including in defence, clean energy, and space,” he said.
