Five things to know about PM Modi’s historic visit to the US

Tuesday saw the departure of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his historic trip to the United States. The highest level of diplomatic courtesy usually reserved for close allies was shown to Modi on his visit to the United States.

US President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden have extended an invitation to Modi for a State visit.

The following five details of PM Modi’s visit to the United States are listed:

1. On June 21, the UN leadership and representatives from across the world will celebrate International Yoga Day at the UN headquarters in New York to kick off the visit.

2. After that, on June 22, Modi will fly to Washington, DC, where he will continue his high-level discussions with Vice President Biden and other top US officials. He and many other dignitaries will soon be attending the State Banquet with President Biden and First Lady Jill Biden.

3. At the request of Congressional leadership, he will also speak to a joint session of the US Congress on June 22 during his visit. He would make history as the first prime leader to deliver two addresses to the US Congress.

4. On June 23, Vice President Kamala Harris and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken will also welcome Modi at a luncheon. Along with the formal conversation, he will also engage in conversation with the top CEOs of the top 20 American businesses, industry experts, and members of the Indian diaspora.

5. In the meanwhile, Modi has been invited by President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi to travel from Washington to Cairo between June 24 and June 25, when he will have high-level meetings with President Sisi and other dignitaries of the Egyptian administration.

“Leaving for USA, where I will attend programmes in New York City and Washington DC,” Modi tweeted before flying to the US. These events include Yoga Day festivities at the @UN HQ, conversations with the @POTUS @JoeBiden, a speech to the US Congress’ Joint Session, and more.

He said, “In the USA, I will also get the chance to network with business executives, engage with the Indian community, and meet think leaders from other fields. In important areas like trade, business, innovation, technology, and other similar ones, we want to strengthen connections between India and the USA.

 

“Relationships between the US and India are developing deeper connections across industries. The biggest supplier of products and services to India is the United States. In the domains of research, technology, education, health, and defence and security, we work closely together. The effort on Critical & Emerging Technologies has expanded collaboration in the areas of biotechnology, communications, quantum, artificial intelligence, and military industrial cooperation. Additionally, our two nations are working together to advance our common goal of a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific, Modi added.
