Bharat Ratna 2024: On March 30, President Droupadi Murmu awarded the Bharat Ratna to a number of distinguished individuals, including two posthumous former prime ministers and renowned Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader LK Advani.
The honour will be presented to LK Advani at his home tomorrow, March 31.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, and other dignitaries attended the event. This year, the government has announced five Bharat Ratna awards, one of which will go to BJP veteran and former deputy prime minister LK Advani.

Posthumous awards to four past prime ministers
With the exception of former Deputy Prime Minister LK Advani, four other recipients of the Bharat Ratna were posthumous: former Prime Ministers Chaudhary Charan Singh and PV Narasimha Rao; renowned agricultural scientist MS Swaminathan; and former Chief Minister of Bihar, Karpoori Thakur.

“Delighted to share that our former Prime Minister, PV Narasimha Rao Garu, will be honoured with the Bharat Ratna,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi had earlier tweeted on X. Narasimha Rao Garu was a renowned politician and scholar who rendered significant service to India in a number of roles.

“His efforts as Andhra Pradesh’s Chief Minister, a Union Minister, and a long-serving member of the Legislative Assembly and Parliament will also be remembered. India’s economy grew thanks in large part to his visionary leadership, which also laid a strong basis for future wealth and development. “It is the good fortune of our government that former Prime Minister of the country, Chaudhary Charan Singh, is being honoured with Bharat Ratna,” PM Modi wrote on X while announcing Chaudhary Charan Singh’s accolade. This accolade is devoted to his unparalleled service to the nation. His whole life had been devoted to promoting the welfare and rights of farmers.”

Additionally, Bharat Ratna for agricultural scientist MS Swaminathan was declared by PM Modi.

“The Government of India is very happy to award MS Swaminathan Ji the Bharat Ratna in honour of his outstanding contributions to agriculture and farmer welfare in our country. The Prime Minister said, “He made exceptional efforts towards modernising Indian agriculture and played a pivotal role in helping India achieve self-reliance in agriculture during difficult times.”
