Four years later, anti-CAA demonstrations recur in Assam

DIBRUGARH/GUWAHATI: Following Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s recent decision to implement the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) norms ahead to Lok Sabha elections, protests against the law have returned to Assam after a four-year absence.

On Thursday, ten activists from the student-run organizations Satra Mukti Sangram Samiti (SMSS) and Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) were taken into custody in the districts of Dhubri, Tinsukia, and Hailakandi.

Protesting against the CAA, KMSS and SMSS activists in Dhubri formed a line in the street. One KMSS protester in Hailakandi and five of them were subsequently freed from police custody. Release of the four KMSS activists who were held in the Tinsukia area was still pending. The KMSS organized a sit-in against CAA in Guwahati as well.
Violent demonstrations broke out in Assam shortly after the CAA was passed into law in December 2019.
