IIT-K suicide: A student purchased ropes from an online retailer

Kanpur: The victim, Priyanka Jaiswal, had just bought two ropes from an internet marketing business, according to investigations into the suspected suicide of a PhD student in her dorm room at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur. The corpse of Priyanka was discovered dangling from her dorm room ceiling by a substantial nylon rope.

Priyanka, a native of Dumka, Jharkhand, enrolled in IIT-Kanpur’s PhD program in chemical engineering on December 29, 2023. According to police, investigations are being conducted to determine what led the girl to take the drastic measure, but a whole picture won’t become apparent until the investigating officer has had extensive conversations with the deceased’s relatives.
“Two sets of rope, one heavy and the other thin, were retrieved from the location. A senior police officer with knowledge of the case said, “She had placed an internet purchase for them a few days before. However, Abhishek Kumar Pandey, assistant commissioner of police, said, “It appears that the researcher had been considering taking the drastic measure for the previous few days.”
Inspector Dhananjay Pandey of Kalyanpur police, who is looking into the suicide, said that while an effort was made to ask her parents why they committed suicide, they are not in a position to comment.
On Friday, Priyanka’s father, Narendra Jaiswal, who works as an engineer at a coal mine, came to the city to retrieve her remains. In the last 30 days, there have been three instances of IIT-Kanpur students taking their own lives.
After being “temporarily” prohibited from pursuing his study, Vikas Kumar Meena (31), an MTech student in his second year at the institution, is said to have hung himself from the ceiling fan in his dorm room on January 10. Pallavi Chilka, a 34-year-old researcher, committed suicide on December 19 by hanging herself from the ceiling fan in her dorm room on the second floor. She was working on postdoctoral studies via the Department of Bioengineering and Biosciences.
