In Odisha, crops suffer the most from unseasonal rains

In the last 24 hours, Kendrapara and Jajpur have seen intense, unseasonal rains that have damaged crops in various areas of the two districts.

Coastal Kendrapara: Numerous villages in the blocks of Aul, Mahakalapada, Rajnagar, Marsaghai, Rajkanika, and Garadpur complained of agricultural loss from the late rain. The farmers berated the weather for ruining their vegetable and greengram harvests.

A 40-year-old farmer from Bharatpur village named Prahallad Jena said that green gram (mung) and vegetable crops had been harmed over large areas of land by the intense rain and wind. “We would have been busy harvesting mung crops within a week if there had been no rain during the harvesting season.” Now, however, we are stumbling about in the dark.

Umesh Chandra Singh, a farmer leader and the head of the Krushak Sabha district unit, stated that many farmers had given up on their prospects of big mung harvests due to the rains.

Manoj Chand, the Kendrapara Chief District Agricultural Officer (CDAO), said that department representatives had been requested to evaluate agricultural damage in each block. Following receipt of the crop damage reports, the impacted farmers will receive appropriate compensation.

According to sources, the district’s low-lying parts experienced water-logging as a result of the unexpected rainfall. The Rehabilitation colony at Bagapatia, which is home to over 3,000 people, was the most severely damaged.

Similar to Jajpur, normal life was disrupted and crops suffered damage as a result of Tuesday night’s Nor’wester that blasted over the area.

Huge trees and electrical poles were uprooted in Bari, Dharmasala, Badachana, Rasulpur, Dasarathpur, Binjharpur, Dangadi, Sukinda, and Korei by a thunderstorm and rain. In some places, the power supply was also interrupted.

The recent two days of nonstop rain, according to sources, has damaged crops throughout a large number of places. Vegetables, groundnuts, and green grams have been negatively impacted in Rasulpur, Bari, Badachana, Jajpur, and Dharmasala.
