In Panchkula, parents and students are stressed up as school buses remain off the road

Due to operators’ protests over the district administration’s action against school vehicles operating without a valid permit and being unroadworthy, school buses remained off the road today, causing difficulty to both parents and pupils.

Following a deadly traffic accident that occurred in Mahendragarh on April 11, all school buses operating in the city are now subject to stringent inspections.

Out of 285 buses in Panchkula, the Regional Transport Office (RTA) inspected more than 75 of them for Surakshit School Vahan Policy infractions and seized 14 of them.

The move prompted school bus conductors and drivers to stage a protest.

The School Bus Drivers’ Union leaders said that they had met with representatives at the RTA office and requested an extension of time to get the required licenses and equipment for their buses.

One of the union’s leaders, Surender Kumar, said, “The authorities did not show us any mercy. Thus, on Monday, we started a demonstration.

Students who use school buses said that they were forced to find other methods to go to school as a consequence. A kid in class 9 remarked, “We kept waiting for the buses only to be told that we will have to go on our own due to a protest by drivers’ union.”

If they were not given enough time to make sure their cars were safe to transport kids in, Kumar threatened to carry on the demonstration tomorrow.

According to RTA Hairatjeet Kaur, the office acted quickly to stop school buses from being used on the road without being roadworthy. “We have already seized 14 of the 75 buses that we inspected.” She noted that the bus inspections will go on.

Later in the evening, union representatives said that they had met with Union Transport Minister Piyush Goyal and were granted ten days to make sure the buses were in good working order and get licenses to operate them. As a result, Kumar said, “We have ended our protest.”

After given time to conform, the demonstration ends.
