Karnataka: Sumalatha promises to join the BJP, ending the uncertainty

Sumalatha Ambareesh, a veteran actress turned politician, put an end to the speculation on Wednesday by declaring her support for the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP in the best interests of the state. Previously, she had kept her cards close to her chest and forced the Congress and JDS to play guessing games.

In an hour-long speech to her Mandya fans, Sumalatha said that she would shortly join the BJP. She praised Modi for granting grants totaling Rs 4,000 crore. The Prime Minister informed me that individuals such as me are needed in these areas. This is how one develops leadership,” she said.

She made it clear that she would not join the Congress, an organisation that her husband Ambreesh had been a part of for more than 20 years. She also said that she would not run as an independent again since the Mandya seat had been awarded to JDS, an ally of the BJP.

Former chief minister and JDS candidate HD Kumaraswamy, who had visited her a few days before to ask for her assistance and support, was relieved to hear this news.

BY Vijayendra, the state BJP president, had also met Sumalatha and had private discussions with her. She allegedly received offers to run for office from Mysuru, Bengaluru North, or Chikkaballapur.

When her fans insisted that she run for the Mandya Lok Sabha seat as an independent, the seasoned actress lost control.

Remembering that her foray into electoral politics came about as a result of the sudden death of her spouse, MP Ambreesh, Sumalatha said she was forced to enter the 2019 race as an independent in order to appease the public’s love and devotion.

She praised Modi for giving her his backing and having faith in her to make judgments on policies pertaining to the Mandya district’s growth.

She claimed to have presided over the most DISHA meetings and to have equally divided the Member of Parliament Local Area Development Fund funds across the constituency.

She said that the Jal Jeevan mission, rural road improvements, and other federal government initiatives had reached the people’s doorsteps. “JDS, the BJP’s partner, has won the seat in Mandya, despite my best efforts to ensure the BJP kept it. We have to endeavor to fortify and bolster the Prime Minister’s position,” she said.

Thanking the public for their support throughout her tough times and her hard-fought campaigns in the last election, Sumalatha expressed gratitude to women, young people, and prominent actors Darshan and Yash. She also said that she declined the BJP’s invitation to run for office or move to a another constituency. “Even if other politicians want to get tickets from any location, I will only engage in politics inside the boundaries of Mandya. I will always remain Mandya’s daughter-in-law and I will always treasure the affection that people have given me, regardless of whether I am in a position of authority or not,” she said.
