Locals in Jalandhar lament the unclean water supply

Today, residents who have been receiving tainted water for the previous three days came to the Municipal Corporation office. There, they protested and talked with the authorities.

The locals complained that there was a dirty drinking water shortage in their communities. According to one of the complainants, a broken pipeline has prevented their area’s water supply from operating for the last three days.

The Jalandhar Tribune has reported that the MC cell is receiving several complaints about tainted water supplies and inadequate sewerage.

When residents of Shiv Nagar went to the MC office, they also complained about tainted water. Consequently, a number of individuals were becoming ill.

Notably, the Municipal Corporation has a significant backlog of complaints. Up until February 26, it received more than 300 complaints about bad sewage systems and tainted water supplies.

People have long struggled with the sewage issue. Since not much has been done to address the problem, it has now become a persistent concern.

Residents were offered “hope” by the “Aap Di Sarkar, Aap De Dwar” camps as they waited for a solution to their sewage problems. A great number of affected locals have also been visiting the camps and sharing their experiences. Still, no action has been taken to address the issue.

At one of the camps, residents of Bhullar colony, Dakoha village, and other surrounding regions expressed their predicament. Locals said that the discharge of sewage was causing them great misery. MLA Raman Arora and Additional Commissioner Amarjit Singh Bains visited the Jaitewal Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) after hearing about their issues. There, they learned that the STP was not operating at maximum efficiency.

According to a recent statement from an O&M Department official, there is an issue since sewage treatment plants (STPs) ability to handle the water is lower than the amount produced. “The city needs a proper storm sewer channel,” he had said.
