Mamata Banerjee claims in a letter to PM Modi that West Bengal’s Aadhaar cards have been deactivated

In a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee claimed that the state has deactivated the Aadhaar cards of members of the Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribes, and Other Backward Classes. The action, in her opinion, blatantly violated natural justice.

The leader of the Trinamool party said that the Aadhaar cards had been deleted without any notice. Banerjee said, “The UIDAl head office in New Delhi has been directly issuing letters to individuals and family members informing them about the deactivation of their Aadhaar cards without any field inquiry, hearing the persons, or taking the state government into confidence.”

According to the letter, “a large number” of irate citizens had been getting in touch with the state administration about the issue. “Every person in the state is terrified about this situation. “I would like to inquire with you regarding the reasons behind the abrupt deactivation of Aadhaar cards without providing a rationale,” the letter said.

Banerjee, who was critical of the Center, said that the deactivation was a step toward the creation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC).
