Punjab: Congress leaders who were refused a ticket join a campaign panel

The Congress has scrambled to form the much-delayed campaign committee with an emphasis on rearranging its top leaders, who were refused tickets, with just a week remaining before Punjab’s polls.

The campaign committee appoints at least seven of these leaders to the positions of chairman, co-chairman, senior vice-chairman, and convener. Party officials said, “It is definitely an attempt to keep the leaders in good humor and check any dissension in the party.”

The All-India Congress Committee on Tuesday announced a list of committee members, with CLP leader Partap Bajwa advocating for party candidates across the state and PPCC president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring defending his personal and party’s status in Ludhiana.

The committee’s job is to concentrate on concerns raised by the central leadership against the BJP and to create coherence to the candidates’ campaigns.

The committee has selected Rana KP Singh, a prominent Hindu politician and former Speaker of the Vidhan Sabha, to head the committee. Singh was a strong candidate for the Anandpur Sahib seat.

Co-chairmen include Sukhwinder Singh Danny, a former MLA from the Jandiala Assembly sector who was a strong candidate for the Faridkot seat, and Hardyal Kamboj, a former MLA from Rajpura who was running for the Patiala seat. As the senior vice-chairman, Pawan Adia, a former Sham Chaurasi MLA who ran for office from Hoshiarpur, has been appointed, while Jasbir Singh Dimpa, the current MP for Khadoor Sahib, serves as the convener.

Mohammed Sadique, another sitting MP, has been admitted as a member.

Head of the committee is Rana KP.

The panel’s chairman is Rana KP Singh, a prominent Hindu politician and former speaker.
Hardyal Kamboj and Sukhwinder Singh Danny, two former MLAs, have been appointed co-chairmen.
