Rahul Gandhi Receives a 15-Day Extension From A Special Court in the Controversial “Modi Surname Case”

In a major move, Rahul Gandhi, a well-known Congressman, has been given a 15-day extension by the special court in Ranchi to appear before it as part of an ongoing hearing in the contentious “Modi surname case.” The Jharkhand High Court is presently hearing an appeal after Magistrate Anamika Kisku first rejected Gandhi’s plea for a physical presence exemption, according to the Hindustan Times. This judgement follows that denial.

Gandhi’s attorney, Deepankar Roy, thanked the court for the temporary reprieve and said, “Based on our appeal at the high court, we asked a 15-day extension. The following hearing has been set on July 4 by the court. The case is related to a defamation claim Pradip Modi filed after he found Gandhi’s alleged remark, “All Modis are thieves,” offensive at a 2019 election rally in Ranchi.

It is important to remember that Rahul Gandhi previously faced a case quite identical to this one, and a Gujarat court found him guilty in March. His exclusion from the Lok Sabha was a result of this conviction. Gandhi allegedly made the contentious comment in the Kolar region of Karnataka before the 2019 presidential election. Gandhi was convicted guilty and given a two-year jail term by the Surat court in Gujarat, the state where Prime Minister Narendra Modi was born. Gandhi was nonetheless granted bail in order to allow him to appeal the decision.

After being disappointed with the verdict, Pradip sued Gandhi for slander. Gandhi attempted to have the case dismissed, but on July 2, 2022, the Jharkhand High Court denied his request. Gandhi’s request for exemption from personal attendance was denied in May by the MP-MLA court in Ranchi, which resulted in the issuing of a new summons.
