Students at AMU block university entrances in protest against the detention of a student leader

After a dispute with the police over the arrest of a student leader outside the university’s grounds, a group of Aligarh Muslim University students blocked the two major access gates to the school on Saturday during their protest.

Farhan Zubairi, an AMU student leader, was the subject of a non-bailable warrant, according to police, in relation to a violent event that happened on July 26. Six individuals have already been detained and seven persons have been identified in connection with this event, they said.

Since 2017, Zubairi has been the target of several further lawsuits filed under the IPC and other legal statutes. Zubairi was detained on Friday night at the Purani chungi crossing during a roadside police check of cars, according to Civil Lines Circle Officer Ashok Singh. He was booked into prison.

Another student leader was also held by the police but was later released. As word of these instances spread, sizable numbers of students gathered outside the university’s gates and started to protest.

To prevent any untoward occurrence, security measures on and around the university have been reinforced, according to authorities.
