Voters in Hyderabad Play “Hide-And-Seek”: Low Turnout in Assembly and Lok Sabha Elections

Observers note that people in Hyderabad city seats seem uninterested in voting in either the assembly or national elections. 3,32,32,318 people cast ballots in the Telangana Lok Sabha elections on May 13. Several constituencies this year had poor voter participation in the elections, including:

Malakpet: 38.3%
Yakutpura: 42.7%
45.19% in Chandrayangutta
Charminar: 48.53 percent
48.7% in Bahadurpura
Goshamahal: 49%

Some commentators blame the poor voter participation in these districts on Andhra settlers in Hyderabad traveling to neighboring Andhra Pradesh to cast their ballots in the concurrent assembly and Lok Sabha elections.

Nevertheless, there is not much of a difference in voter participation when we look at the statistics for these seats’ assembly election turnout in 2023.

In the 2023 assembly elections, 3,17,17,389 people cast ballots. In the seats mentioned above, the polling percentage was:

Malakpet: 41.53 percent
Yakutpura: 39.77 percent
45.51% in Chandrayangutta
Charminar percentage: 43.38%
45.39% in Bahadurpura
Goshamahal: 54.78 percent

The low voting percentage in Secunderabad, Hyderabad’s twin city, also reflects the apathy of urban voters.

The two constituencies of the Secunderabad Lok Sabha constituency that polled at more above 50% were Secunderabad (53.05) and Amberpet (50.12). Less than half of the electorate voted in the remaining seats.

Musheerabad: 45.25 percent
49.8% in Khairatabad
Hill Jubilee: 45.69%
49.41% in Sanathnagar
Nampally: 45.37 percent

A similar pattern was seen in the assembly elections as well. Secunderabad had a 53.56 percent voting percentage, although turnout was low in the other seats.

Amberpet: 52.86%
Musheerabad: 50.78%
52.33% in Khairatabad
Golden Valley: 47.58%
51.5% in Sanathnagar
Nampally: 46.76%

At 5 p.m. on the fourth day of the Lok Sabha elections, Hyderabad had the lowest voting percentage (45.07). Malkajgiri scored 46.27%, and Secunderabad 42.48%.

Election Commission statistics indicates that Telangana’s voter turnout for the state’s 17 Lok Sabha seats was around 61.39%.

According to State Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Vikas Raj, an investigation is underway into a number of accusations.

A complaint has been filed at Malakpet Police Station against BJP candidate Madhavi Latha under several provisions of the IPC and the Representation of the People Act, according to the district collector for Hyderabad, who made this announcement on the social networking platform X. This comes after an accusation that she asked female voters wearing burqas to reveal their faces in order to verify their identities.

The BJP candidate stated there was nothing improper with her request that the ladies confirm their identification. “I’m running for office. A candidate is legally permitted to examine the ID cards without using a facemask. Since I am a woman and not a guy, I have just asked to view and validate with the ID cards. Would you kindly grant my request? Someone is afraid if they want to make a big deal out of it, the speaker said.
