At the age of 38, Asamoah Gyan of Ghana announces his retirement

After more than 20 years at the highest tier of professional football, Ghana’s Asamoah Gyan has declared his formal retirement.

The 38-year-old, who earned 109 caps for Ghana between 2003 and 2019, made the news after participating in a panel discussion at the African Export-Import Bank’s annual general meeting, according to Xinhua.

Gyan said, “I would want to inform my nation and supporters that I have officially retired from football today.

He was a former captain of Ghana’s national team and most recently played as a striker for Legon Cities in the Ghana Premier League.

Gyan’s professional career brought him from his hometown side Liberty Professionals to Italian clubs Modena and Udinese, French club Rennes, and English Premier League team Sunderland.

Gyan has played for Shanghai SIPG of the Chinese Super League and Al Ain of the United Arab Emirates.
