Australian Open 2024: Jannik Sinner advances to the fourth round after easily defeating Sebastian Baez

With a commanding four-game victory against 26th-seeded Sebastian Baez on Friday, Jannik Sinner solidified his Australian Open championship prospects.

After only one hour and fifty-two minutes on the court, the 22-year-old Italian fourth seed defeated the Argentine 6-0, 6-1, 6-3.

It put him in position to face either Czech player Tomas Machac or 15th-seeded Russian Karen Khachanov in the fourth round.

Unlike the three players who are ranked above of Sinner—defending champion Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz, and Daniil Medvedev—he has not lost a set in his three matches so far.

Sinner, who decided without participating in a warm-up competition this year, said, “In general, I’m playing really well and feeling great here.” “I’m just content with my current state of mind.”

In 2023, Sinner had a breakthrough year. He defeated Djokovic in group play to win his first Masters title in Toronto and go to the ATP Finals championship final.

After that, he defeated Djokovic once more while leading Italy to the Davis Cup championship, and he ended the year at his peak.

The Italian finished in the fourth round of last year’s major and reached the quarterfinals of the 2022 edition, but he is expected to do better this year after shooting up the rankings.
