I was in the wrong era, says Anju Bobby George, which makes me envious of today’s athletes

Anju Bobby George, the first-ever medalist from India at the World Athletics Championship, praises Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s desire to promote and change sports in the nation while claiming that she competed “in the wrong era.”

The renowned long jumper stated, “As a sportsperson, I was here for almost 25 years and I’m seeing a lot of changes,” during a ceremony held at the PM’s mansion on Christmas. Twenty years ago, when I won India’s first global medal, not even my department was willing to promote me.

However, since Neeraj (Chopra) received a medal, I’ve seen a shift in how we celebrate… During the occasion, Anju said, “I envy them because I was in the wrong era.”

Anju, a 2003 World Championships in Athletics bronze medallist in the women’s long jump in Paris, spoke on women’s empowerment and how the nation now recognizes athletes’ achievements.

“Empowering women is no longer simply a phrase. All Indian girls are eager to dream and certain that their aspirations will materialize,” the speaker said.

Anju was one of the well-known people that attended the Christmas interaction between the PM and the Christian community.

“I believe we will be at the top (of the sports world) very soon,” she said.

Anju’s notable accomplishments include winning a gold medal at the 2003 Afro-Asian Games and placing fifth in the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens with a personal best of 6.83 meters.

She received the Padma Shri, the fourth-highest civilian honor, in 2004, the Khel Ratna in 2003, and the Arjuna Award in 2002.
