Inter Miami appoints an ex-Barcelona and Argentina coach as manager after Messi’s signing

On Wednesday, Inter Miami CF signed Gerardo “Tata” Martino, a former MLS champion coach, to lead the team.

International superstar Lionel Messi, who is expected to sign with Inter Miami late next month, previously trained under Martino.

The 60-year-old Martino led Atlanta United to the 2018 MLS Cup.

In a press release, Martino commented, “I’m very excited to join a big club like Inter Miami and I know together we can accomplish many great things.” The club has the infrastructure needed to be a serious contender in the area, and I think we can get there with everyone’s dedication and hard work.

Messi was coached by Martino when playing for Barcelona in 2013–14 and the Argentina national team in 2014–16. There was widespread speculation that Martino was the aim of Inter Miami because of their close friendship with Messi.

“It gives us great pleasure to welcome Tata to Inter Miami. Jorge Mas, the controlling owner of Inter Miami, stated in a statement, “We believe he is a coach that fits our aspirations as a club and we are hopeful about what we can achieve together. “We believe that Tata’s experience coaching at the highest levels will be extremely helpful to us as we aim to compete for titles here.”

In two regular-season games with Atlanta United (2017–18), Martino had a 36–16–16 record. He left his position following the 2018 campaign, citing personal reasons. Martino led Mexico’s national team for the next four years.

Phil Neville, who was let go on June 1, is replaced by Martino. Miami’s losing run has now reached seven games under interim coach Javier Morales, who has led the squad to a 0-3-0 record.

In the Eastern Conference, the Herons are last.

Martino stated of the Herons, “Right now, this is a squad that portrays a negative image in the standings. “Injuries and players called up to their national teams also destroy it.

“However, there are high hopes for the new players who will debut shortly. They are really significant. So that we can have a season finale more in accordance with what is expected of this club, I hope they can assist us improve the squad from an emotional and playing standpoint.

David Beckham, a former professional athlete and current co-owner of Inter Miami, was happy to see the hiring go place.

Tata is a well-known athlete in our sport, and his record speaks for itself, according to Beckham. “We are confident that his sporting accomplishments and head coaching experience will inspire our team and electrify our fans, and we look forward to seeing the impact he will have on and off the pitch,” the statement said.
