Mumbai Indians defeat Rajasthan Royals on this day in 2013 to win their second CLT20 championship

One of the Indian Premier League (IPL) teams, Mumbai Indians has a sizable fan following not only in India but also in other nations. Over the years, the squad has been blessed with the presence of several legendary players, including master fast bowler Lasith Malinga and master batsman Sachin Tendulkar. Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings are presently the two most successful teams in the IPL, both having won five championships.

The Paltans might demonstrate their superiority on the international stage as well as at home by participating in the Champions League T20. The International Franchise Competition has only been won twice by MI. On this day (October 6), 10 years ago, they won their second CLT20 championship.

In a high-scoring final, the team captained by Rohit Sharma defeated Rajasthan Royals, another IPL team, to win the title. MI entered the CLT20 off of their first IPL victory. In the championship match, they narrowly defeated the two-time defending champions CSK.

Mumbai received a straight admission into the CLT20’s main tournament as a result of the victory. Rajasthan, who placed third in the IPL, did not participate in the qualification season either.

In the tournament’s first match between the two teams, RR won easily by 7 wickets. RR finished first in Group A after winning all of their group-league games, with MI coming in second.

RR punched their ticket after defeating CSK by 4 wickets, while MI punched theirs after defeating Trinidad & Tobago of the West Indies in the semifinals.

The CLT20 final, which was held at Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium (formerly known as Feroz Shah Kotla), got off to a rousing start despite MI losing the toss. Early on, they lost Sachin Tendulkar’s wicket.

However, the other opener, Dwayne Smith, was focused at the wicket and attacked the opposing bowlers with vigor. Before Pravin Tambe sent him back, Smith scored 44 runs off of 29 pitches.

The middle-order hitters, led by skipper Rohit Sharma, were instrumental in the team’s success. In the end, MI recorded a whopping 202 runs on the board while losing 6 wickets in 20 overs, propelled by some explosive cameos from Glenn Maxwell, Dinesh Karthik, and Harbhajan Singh.

With opener Kushal Perera being out in the first over of the chase, RR was unable to get off to a strong start. After that, Ajinkya Rahane and Sanju Samson took over.

They combined for a 99-run combination that revived an inning and both recorded half century. Harbhajan Singh emerged from hiding just as RR seemed to have an easy deal.

The renowned spinner quickly took four wickets to destroy the opposing middle order. Only Stuart Binny could reach a two-digit score after Samson. RR was run out for 169 runs thanks to Kieron Pollard, who also excelled with the ball and claimed three victims.

It was the CLT20’s second-to-last edition. Due to a decline in spectators and financial viability, the competition was abandoned in 2014.
