Vinicius Jr.’s racist abuse in Spain results in fines and stadium bans

For fans who racially assaulted Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior, the Spanish government ordered penalties and stadium bans on Monday.

Following the hanging of a Vinicius effigy from a bridge in January, four persons will get 60 001 euro ($64 270) fines and two-year bans from grounds.

In addition to being fined 5,000 euros, three people who racially abused the 22-year-old at a La Liga game in May will also be prohibited from entering stadiums for a year.

Vinicius said that Spain now “belongs to racists” after the game.

After being declared by Spain’s National Sports Council, an organization accountable to the Sports minister, the penalties must be approved by the Spanish government.

The occurrences have led to intense condemnation of both Spanish football culture and the country’s authorities.

Following the most recent incident, Luis Rubiales, the head of the Spanish Football Federation, acknowledged that racism was a “problem” in the nation.
