May 24, Lumbini [Nepal]: Officials at the Everest Base Camp reported that a Kenyan and Nepali climber who had been missing for days had been discovered dead close to the summit of the mountain. The authorities said that 40-year-old Kenyan climber Cheruiyot Kirui was discovered by rescuers from the Seven Peak Treks, a short distance below Mount Everest’s peak. Nepali climber Binod Babu Bastakoti died at Camp IV while descending, they said.

It is unknown at this time what the condition of Nawang Sherpa, who was in the death zone with Kenyan climber Kirui, is. The Kenyan citizen had disconnected from the radio at Bishop Rock and was trying to ascend Everest without more oxygen. One of the search team members said, “Nawang had last spoken with the Bishop Rock base camp officials about how Kirui refused to return and even consumed bottled oxygen but displayed abnormal behavior.”

The expedition organizing business Narbin Magar of Booking Own Pvt. Ltd. stated that the Nepali climber passed away on Wednesday above Camp IV due to altitude sickness. The climber had been unwell while descending from the summit point, at an altitude of around 8,300 meters. Two climbers went down earlier on Tuesday on Mount Everest, close to the Hillary step. Part of the route in the Hillary portion below the summit point crumbled, causing Daniel Paul Peterson from the UK and Pas Tenji Sherpa from Makalu to fall, according to the authorities.

In a similar vein, Gabriel Tabara of Romania was discovered deceased on Tuesday inside his tent in Camp III. On May 13, while descending from the summit point, two more Mongolian climbers, Usukhjargal Tsedendamba and Prevsuren Lkhagvajav, perished above 8,500 meters. Cheruiyot Kirui became the first African to climb a mountain over 8,000 meters without the use of supplementary oxygen when he successfully ascended Mt. Manaslu (8,163 meters) in September 2023. Among his other noteworthy climbs are several speed ascents of Mt. Kilimanjaro (5,895 m), which he accomplished in just 15 hours for the whole climb. In addition, Kirui has ascended Mount Kenya (5,199 meters) more than 20 times, breaking course records on its three primary routes.
