A man from Kolkata loses Rs 42,000 shortly after his phone was stolen

Cybercrime instances have significantly increased over the last several years, with hackers using a variety of deceptive techniques to steal peoples’ personal information and money. While these have up to now been perpetrated via internet frauds and rackets, a recent incident from Kolkata, West Bengal, has come to light where a cybercrime was committed after a man’s phone was taken from him. The person whose phone was stolen afterwards learned that money had been taken from his mobile phone-registered UPI-linked bank account.

According to the report, Sankar Ghosh, a native of Kestopur, was traveling on a nighttime bus that was almost completely empty when the event happened close to New Alipore. When the accused outside the windows—who seemed to have the guy in his sights—snatched the phone and fled, the man was returning from his workplace in Behala and was sitting by the window seat while composing a message on his phone. Ghosh was in disbelief since all that transpired was over in a couple of minutes.

However, this was insufficient since within 15 minutes of the phone being taken, Rs 42,000 was deducted from the owner of the phone’s UPI-linked bank account.

Police record the incident

Ghosh said in his interview with the magazine that he learned about the stolen money after purchasing a new phone and SIM card. He said that his phone had undoubtedly been hacked despite the fact that he never keeps passwords on his mobile devices. In the meanwhile, he filed two police reports with relation to the theft of the money and the loss of the phone.

The officer also talked to the media and said that they had not discovered any points of vulnerability since, in their opinion, the pin had already been input for the money withdrawal, indicating that someone was already aware of the code.

This is significant since it occurs at a time when phone theft has increased in the area, and criminals are increasingly stealing people’s phones as well as the personal information they save on them.

Therefore, it is usually advisable for people to keep their passwords and UPI pins private.
