Kolkata College apologizes after facing backlash for refusing to admit students who do not study the English language

Kolkata’s Loreto College is receiving a lot of heat after denying admission to pupils from schools with a Bengali or Hindi medium. A list of the college’s chosen applicants for a number of undergraduate courses was recently made public. There was a message accompanying the list. Instructions, tests, and library materials at the institution are entirely in English, according to the statement. The institution also said that applicants from schools with a vernacular medium of instruction were not taken into consideration.

“Only English is used as the teaching language at Loreto College. Exam questions must only be answered in English. Other than vernacular Bengali and Hindi, our renowned Open Shelf Library only includes English reference/textbooks and periodicals, according to the remark.

The University of Calcutta had to step in and request an explanation from its head after this infuriated a lot of people. Sister Christine Coutinho, the principal of Loreto, has made it plain that the regulation does not comply with university policies. Following all the criticism, the institution apologized.

“The college apologizes for unintentionally offending the students’ feelings. It was never the goal to treat any kid unfairly because of their background. The decision to give kids from English-medium schools precedence was made for a purpose, nevertheless. Teachers have noted that it might be challenging for pupils to understand lectures when they attend schools where English is not the primary language of teaching. Therefore, it was a realistic decision to ensure that the pupils did not feel uncomfortable, according to the apologies.

According to multiple college grads, the new “discriminatory” regulation was absent from earlier sessions. The message has now been modified to remove the racist language.
