Ahmedabad Woman Tracked by Ex-Partner Using Apple AirIdentifier: Report

A guy has been accused of stalking his ex-partner using an Apple AirTag, a discrete Bluetooth tracker that can be used to follow luggage, keychains, and other tiny objects, according to a FIR filed by the Ahmedabad Cyber Cell.

According to Deccan Herald, the stalker utilized the AirTag to locate the lady (his ex-partner), and a FIR has now been filed under sections 354 D of the Indian Penal Code and 66E of the IT Act as a result.

Apple’s AirTag has been praised for its practicality and usefulness in monitoring assets, however recent investigations have suggested that the Apple AirTag and other Bluetooth-based trackers have also been used for sinister reasons like stalking.

According to the story, the lady initially became aware that an AirTag was “moving with” her in May after receiving a notification on her iPhone 13 Pro Max. And the alarm appeared once again when she was travelling from her home to her business. Again, this took place on August 29. According to reports, the woman’s driver once saw another warning stating, “Your location can be seen by the owner of this AirTag.”

Now that she knew she was being followed, this gave the lady the motivation to act. As a result, the lady informed the Cyber Cell representatives of this and went to her car’s repair facility to seek for the gadget. She was shocked to see the aforementioned Apple AirTag stuck under the driver’s seat cover.

The stalker, who is alleged to be the woman’s ex-partner and has been tormenting her for a very long time, has apparently been recognized by the police. According to a police official, this may be the first instance of stalking a lady using an AirTag in India, according to Deccan Herald.

In similar news, authorities in Memphis, Tennessee, USA, detained a guy earlier this year after he used an Apple AirTag to monitor his ex-wife’s car. When his ex-wife found the tracking device, the stalker (ex-husband) claimed that he was merely using it to keep tabs on where their kids were.

A business spokesperson for Apple said in a formal statement about stalking, “AirTag was developed to assist people in locating their personal belongings and not to watch individuals or their property. We strongly condemn any malicious use of our goods.
