Britain Makes A Major Bet On AI, Investing 100 Million Pounds to Increase Research & Regulation

On Tuesday, the United Kingdom said that it will invest over 100 million pounds ($125 million) to establish nine new artificial intelligence (AI) research centers and educate regulators on the technology.

“Humans can move at a speed that is comparable to that of AI,” said technology minister Michelle Donelan in a statement. By adopting a flexible, industry-specific strategy, we have started to seize the opportunities right away.

The government said that the centers, which will concentrate on using AI in fields including healthcare, chemistry, and mathematics, as well as a relationship with the United States on responsible AI, would receive around 90 million pounds.

It claimed that an additional 10 million pounds will assist regulators in managing the risks and taking advantage of the potential presented by AI, including creating useful tools to track hazards in industries ranging from healthcare and telecommunications to banking and education.

In November, Britain played home to an international symposium on AI safety.

The “Bletchley Declaration,” which focuses on identifying hazards of common concern and adopting cross-country measures to minimize them, was signed by more than 25 participating nations.
