Government Approves Rs. 1650 Cr. For New LPG Connections, Giving Ujjwala Scheme a Major Boost

On Wednesday, the Union Cabinet approved a Rs. 1650 crore subsidy for new LPG connections under the Ujjwala program. The decision to provide 75 lakh additional connections has been approved.

The government recently said that it will provide an extra 75 lakh Ujjwala connections, bringing the total number of PMUY recipients to 10.35 crores.

The Ujjwala program received more funding in August from the government. The extra subsidy, which is set at Rs 200, brings the total subsidy for PMUY recipients to Rs 400 per cylinder.

LPG cylinders now cost Rs 400 for Ujjwala plan participants, of which Rs 200 is a price reduction and Rs 200 is an existing subsidy.

The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), a flagship program of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MOPNG), was launched in May 2016. Its goal is to make clean cooking fuel, such as LPG, accessible to rural and underprivileged households that would otherwise use traditional cooking fuels like firewood, coal, cow-dung cakes, etc.

Traditional cooking fuels have a negative effect on both the environment and the health of rural women.

The program was introduced on May 1, 2016, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Ballia, Uttar Pradesh.
