Telecom Department warns investors about deepfake videos after NSE

In light of the increased risk that deepfakes may be used to influence stock prices and commit frauds, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has issued a warning to investors about deepfake films and photos following the National Stock Exchange. It has alerted the public to bogus stock market, trading, and free tip promotions on social media platforms.

“Watch out for fake social media app ads purporting to provide free recommendations, trading advice, and the stock market! They could use deepfake pictures and movies. “Never give in to greed,” the DoT said in a warning to a Vodafone customer.

The number of scams in which con artists use deepfake films has increased recently.

For instance, the NSE issued a warning last week after discovering that many investing and stock advising films were using bogus information using the voice and face of CEO Ashishkumar Chauhan. The NSE said that “such videos seem to have been created using sophisticated technologies to imitate Ashishkumar Chauhan’s voice and facial expressions.” The exchange said that none of its employees had the authority to trade or propose any stocks. It said that it was trying to get these social media sites to remove these kinds of content whenever it could.
