Google has introduced a raft of accessibility updates designed to simplify and streamline users’ everyday tasks. These updates, which affect Google Maps, Search, and Chrome, take into account the needs of a variety of users, including those who have disabilities. Here is a list of the updates Google has made for its users.

Google Maps Improvements: Using augmented reality and artificial intelligence, the “Lens in Maps” feature of Google Maps, previously known as “Search with Live View,” directs users through unfamiliar environments and aids them in discovering new locations using the camera on their smartphone. Lens in Maps now supports screen readers on iOS, and Android support will be added later this year, making it simpler for those who are blind or have limited vision to utilize this feature.

Google is also increasing the amount of wheelchair-accessible walking routes available globally on iOS and Android. With the help of this feature, users may request stair-free routes while browsing for walking instructions in Maps, extending the functionality of the wheelchair-accessible transit navigation option that displays step-free transit routes.

In addition to these updates, Google is putting wheelchair accessible information in place and adding business pages to Maps for Android Auto and vehicles with Google built-in. Wheelchair icons are now shown alongside accessible seating, parking, and restrooms when a user searches for a place.

Google Chrome Improvements: Chrome is also receiving upgrades to enhance the user experience. A feature that recognizes errors and suggests URLs based on user intent was originally made accessible in the Chrome address bar earlier this year and is now available in Chrome for Android and iOS.

Upgrades to the Google Camera: Google has also increased the ability of its “Guided Frame” function to identify things rather than people. Users may now capture pictures of their pets, food, papers, and other things using the front- and back-facing cameras on their devices. Later this year, the Pixel 6+ will get this update, which is currently available for the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro.
