Zomato removes the “pure veg mode” riders’ green clothing requirement in response to criticism on social media

Zomato has chosen to abandon the green clothing code for riders who are solely delivering vegetarian food, after a heated discussion on social media over the launch of the “Pure Veg Mode.” Deepinder Goyal, the founder and CEO of Zomato, responded to the criticism and announced the decision on social media.

“While we are going to continue to have a fleet for vegetarians, we have decided to remove the on-ground segregation of this fleet on the ground using the color green,” the CEO said in a post on X (previously Twitter). Every rider in our fleet, including the vegetarian fleet as well as the standard fleet, will be dressed in red.

He said, “This implies that the fleet designated for vegetarian orders won’t be visible from the ground; instead, it will indicate on the app that your vegetarian orders will be fulfilled by the veg only fleet.

What are “Pure Veg Fleet” and “Pure Veg Mode” on Zomato?

According to Goyal, the launch of the “Pure Veg Mode” and “Pure Veg Fleet” is intended to serve just those clients who consume only vegetarian food. Goyal went into more detail about the rationale behind the launch of the business’s “Pure Veg Mode” offering. He continued by saying that no political or religious organization is favored or singled out by this effort, which is impartial.

The CEO said in a different post on X that the option is meant to serve customers—regardless of their caste or religion—who refuse to order from places that serve meat.

But why was it necessary for us to divide the fleets? Because sometimes, in spite of everyone’s best efforts, food does leak into the delivery boxes. In some situations, the prior order’s odor may permeate the subsequent order and cause it to smell like the prior order. Goyal said in the tweet, “We have to divide the fleet for vegetarian orders because of this.

The creator of Zomato also promised that delivery partners’ dietary preferences would not be taken into consideration when they joined the vegetarian delivery fleet.

Some societies and RWAs are said to be refusing to admit our normal fleet at this time. We’ll keep an eye out for any instances like this and collaborate with these RWAs to make sure it doesn’t happen. Because of this shift, we recognize our social duty, and we won’t back away from addressing it when necessary, the CEO said.

“It will roll back in an instant.”
If the meal delivery service sees unfavorable societal effects, they will quickly withdraw the proposal. Goyal said, “And I guarantee that we will quickly reverse this change if we observe any major negative social repercussions.”

This development comes one day after the food delivery platform revealed that it would be using a specialized fleet to deliver meals only from “pure veg” eateries. The deliveries will be delivered in recognizable green boxes.
