After making his big-screen debut in the movie Dukaan, Azhar J. Malik discusses his journey and more

Why did you choose to play the surrogate son in Dukaan?

For me, as a model-turned-actor, Dukaan offered the ideal platform for my big break. I was drawn to the surrogate son’s nuanced persona as it provided an opportunity to explore the intricacies of familial ties. I was able to demonstrate my versatility as an actor in this part right from the start of my film career.

How did you get ready to play a character with so much depth?

By utilizing my theatrical training and past interactions with comparable people, I endeavored to comprehend the subtleties of the surrogate son’s mental state. In order to guarantee authenticity in my representation, I researched and drew from personal experiences as I fully immersed myself in the emotional journey of a young man coming home after a long absence.

What difficulties did you encounter?

The biggest obstacle I had when I immersed myself in the role of a surrogate son was effectively capturing the inner agony of a character divided between loyalty and personal development. It took tact to strike a balance between strength and sensitivity, but I welcomed the challenge.

Could you recount any standout scenes on the set?

There were many special moments on the Dukaan set, but the friendship between the actors and staff sticks out. Our tight relationship worked well together on film, adding to the sincerity of our performances. Every day presented fresh obstacles and victories, making the filming experience one to remember.

How did you get along with the other actors in the film?

Building a relationship with my co-stars was a team effort driven by our shared respect for one another and our commitment to our work. It was a pleasure to collaborate with such a gifted and accomplished performer as Monika Panwar.

Were there any moments in particular that were emotionally taxing?

Throughout the Dukaan shooting, there were a number of emotionally taxing situations that called for a significant level of commitment. Every moment required sincerity, whether it was negotiating complicated family relationships or facing previous traumas. But it was because of these difficulties that I was able to establish a genuine connection with the surrogate son persona.
