Because of Murakami’s Book, Vidya Balan Started Reading Again

Actors frequently find refuge in the quiet nooks of literature, especially in the fast-paced world of film. The well-known Bollywood actress Vidya Balan has found much delight and solace in reading. But like many of us, she too went through a phase of not wanting to turn a page—a reading slump. Her return to the literary world is proof of the influence of a well-chosen book and a considerate suggestion.

‘BeerBiceps’ presenter Ranveer Allahabadia and Vidya Balan had a lively conversation in which Vidya disclosed her unplanned vacation from reading. Her hectic schedule and the responsibilities of her job had caused her to lose touch with her favorite novels. She related how a chance encounter on a plane became a turning point in rekindling her love of reading during this talk.

Prajakta Kohli, a well-known content producer known for her YouTube channel ‘MostlySane,’ was her seatmate on the plane. When Prajakta learned about Vidya’s reading slump, she assured her she would give her a book that would entice her to pick up books again. As promised, she mailed Vidya a copy of “Norwegian Wood” by Haruki Murakami. This action signaled the start of Vidya’s renewed passion for reading.

Norwegian Wood’s Enchantment
The Beatles song “Norwegian Wood” inspired the title of one of Murakami’s best-known books. It explores themes of adulthood’s turbulent journey, grief, and nostalgia. Because of its deep emotional depth and introspective storytelling, readers all around the world find the work to be very approachable and endearing. Murakami’s captivating style, together with its universal themes of love and sadness, make it an engrossing read that often acts as a prelude to his more intricate works.

Vidya Balan was inspired by Murakami’s story and found herself caught in the language of words and feelings again. Her reading slump ended with the book, and it also opened the door to other literary adventures. She started reading “The Lives of Others” by Neel Mukherjee after finishing “Norwegian Wood,” which is a compelling story set against the background of political unrest in 1960s India.
