One of the top actresses in Indian film, Priyanka Chopra, has made a reputation for herself internationally. Priyanka, who was crowned Miss World in 2000, has often represented India abroad.

 

Priyanka recently said in a chat that her family used to watch beauty pageants together. She also acknowledged that she had kept a collage of clippings from newspapers showing Sushmita Sen’s 1994 Miss Universe title and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s 1994 Miss World title.

In a recent episode of Cavanaugh James’ podcast Read The Room, Priyanka Chopra spoke candidly about the admiration beauty pageants have in India. Priyanka claims that beauty pageants such as Miss India and Miss World are “revered” and held in high respect across the nation. She remembered that there was a decade when Indian winners of pageants appeared one after the other.

As she made the connection to America, Priyanka said, “I felt that growing up, we didn’t have that, and pageants have a bad rap (reputation) in America.” Priyanka stated that she developed an interest in pageants as her family used to watch India participate.

“I remember 1993 or 1994, Miss World and Miss Universe, Aishwarya Rai and Sushmita Sen, were both from India that year,” Priyanka reminisced, speaking about Miss World 1994 Aishwarya Rai and Miss Universe 1994 Sushmita Sen. I also had a tiny collage in my room made out of bits and pieces from the newspapers.

The Dil Dhadakne Do actress went on to say that she was astounded by how well the ladies were doing internationally, even if she didn’t want to be them. She acknowledged that she had the same curiosity but said she had never wanted to explore it.

“I really believe I am destiny’s child in some way, and I ride that; I don’t try to fight it,” Priyanka said, referring to herself as destiny’s child and commenting on her own victory.
