Does the Shang-Chi Sequel Still Take Place? What Simu Liu Has To Say

Fans anxiously anticipating the sequel were reassured recently by Simu Liu, the Canadian actor who played the title role in the popular action-adventure movie Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. The devoted fan community was excited and filled with optimism after reading Liu’s statement on Threads, despite the dearth of news on the sequel. On August 16, 2021, the original film, which was directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, made its North American debut.

In response to a fan on Threads who said, “I feel like Marvel has abandoned the Shang-Chi fan base,” Simu Liu recently discussed the movie’s sequel. The company hasn’t made an attempt to start work on the sequel or even include the character in other Marvel movies.

Liu said, “I proooomiss it happening.” Concerns about the movie’s sequel were voiced by Liu’s and other moviegoers in comments on the post.

About three years ago, the movie was released, and it was met with tremendous critical and economic success, earning an estimated $430 million worldwide. With a 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the movie cemented its position as a noteworthy inclusion in the ever growing Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

Given the uncertainties surrounding cinema releases at the time and the ongoing COVID-19 epidemic still affecting theaters worldwide, the movie’s success was especially noteworthy.

However, Marvel Studios has had difficulties with its recent productions, including criticism and unimpressive receptions from spectators, despite the early excitement around the movie’s sequel. According to CBR, Disney CEO Bob Iger blamed a few of these problems on what he saw as a lack of supervision and an excessive amount of Marvel material on Disney+. Furthermore, he said that Marvel Studios was compelled to reconsider its plans for upcoming MCU projects due to problems involving cast members.

The original Shang-Chi movie’s director, Destin Daniel Cretton, has been working hard on other projects, including the much awaited Avengers 5, which is scheduled for release on May 1, 2026. Simu Liu, the primary actor, has been in the spotlight in Hollywood lately for his role as a Ken doll in the popular movie Barbie.

For fans anxiously anticipating the next installment in the Master of Kung Fu saga, Simu Liu’s recent assurance that the Shang-Chi sequel is still in production is encouraging despite these obstacles and diversions.
