Hansal Mehta offers this assessment of Kiran Rao’s moving film “Laapataa Ladies”: “It is old fashioned in a good way.”

‘Laapataa Ladies,’ a comedy-drama helmed by Kiran Rao and produced by Aamir Khan, was discussed by director Hansal Mehta. After seeing the film lately, the director shared his impressions and ideas, complimenting it on its comedy and honesty.

Hansal Mehta posted his emotional critique of the film on Twitter today, April 27.”I saw the very moving and big-hearted Laapata Ladies,” he said. Sometimes clarity and simplicity are all that’s required. That is the movie this is.

Mehta said, “I went in expecting more and finished with more than it apparently delivers,” expressing that the film exceeded his expectations. “It is modern in a very subtle way and old-fashioned in a good way,” he went on. Its comedy and treatment are surprisingly straightforward.
In “Laapataa Ladies,” two newlyweds unintentionally switch positions aboard a train. Their experiences and trip lead to a touching tale of self-discovery. The performances and witty humor in the film have won accolades.

The movie is an adaptation of an award-winning tale by Biplab Goswami. The dialogue and screenplay were written by Sneha Desai, with extra dialogue contributed by Divyanidhi Sharma. The movie became well-known all around the globe even before it opened in cinemas. When it was shown in 2023 at the renowned Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), it received a standing ovation.
