Ryan Gosling holds ‘Angry Birds’ responsible for the lack of a ‘The Nice Guys’ sequel

Shane Black directed the action-comedy film “The Nice Guys” in 2016, starring Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling. Despite the film’s favorable reviews, viewers are left wondering why there was never a sequel. Gosling, who portrayed the title character, Holland March, a private investigator, reportedly said that the film’s first weekend box office performance was the primary cause for the absence of a sequel.

Gosling clarified in a recent interview with Comic Book that “The Nice Guys” faced fierce competition upon its debut. The popular animated movie “The Angry Birds Movie,” which was based on the mobile game, debuted the same weekend as the movie. “So much of a sequel, I think, is decided by the opening weekend of a movie, and we opened up against Angry Birds,” Gosling said. We were utterly decimated by Angry Birds. “Angry Birds” has a follow-up.”

“The Nice Guys” only made $11.2 million on its first weekend at the box office, whereas “The Angry Birds Movie” had a great opening weekend, with $38 million. “The Nice Guys” competed with “Angry Birds,” “Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising,” and “Captain America: Civil War,” which opened with a $21.7 million opening and made $32.9 million in its third weekend.

“The Nice Guys” barely made back its roughly $50 million budget over the course of its whole run, earning $62.8 million. The film’s disappointing opening weekend probably contributed significantly to the fact that a sequel was never made, despite its popularity in other areas.

“The Nice Guys” centers on the tale of fierce enforcer Jackson Healy (Crowe) and private investigator Holland March (Gosling) in 1977s Los Angeles. They get together in an unexpected way to look into the disappearance of a teenage girl. In addition to Gosling and Crowe, the movie stars Margaret Qualley, Keith David, Kim Basinger, Angourie Rice, and Matt Bomer. Furthermore, Robert Downey Jr. appeared in an uncredited part in a cameo.

Fans still like “The Nice Guys” for its blend of humor and action, as well as the connection between Gosling and Crowe, even if there will never be a sequel. It serves as a reminder that, despite having a terrific cast and favorable reviews, a film’s destiny may sometimes be decided by its first weekend of release.
