The Courageous Response to Body Shaming from Vijay Sethupathi: “I Am Happy Being Myself”

Delhi, New: Vijay Sethupathi would be at the top of the list if one were to name the stars of today who are really pan-Indian. The actor has consistently shown his abilities, from portraying endearing heroes [and villains] in a myriad of Tamil and Telugu movies to becoming the ideal antagonist in one of the greatest successes in Bollywood history, Jawan.

But Vijay Sethupathi also discussed some of the less enjoyable aspects of being a well-known celebrity in a promotional interview for his next movie, Merry Christmas. Vijay Sethupathi said, “Main aisa hi tha, body shaming bahut kiya tha mujhe,” in an interview with Indian Express. Wahaan bhi kiya tha [I’ve experienced a lot of body-shaming because of my appearance. Other industries also carried it out. The positive aspect is that you are accepted for who you are, even if it occurred. It is a privilege that I am welcomed wherever I go these days. I am content with who I am because of my audience. I didn’t anticipate this, I didn’t,” he said, alluding to his supporters’ very warm reception.
Vijay Sethupathi also discussed the internet discussion around his straightforward wardrobe choices, which strike some as approachable and carefree. The actor said that the discussions and compliments had affected him and made him more aware of his wardrobe choices. “I try to wear clothes that make me feel comfortable, so sometimes I think twice before dressing up as a character. People have said I’m too simplistic at times and that I’m showing off at other times. How to use a basic Matlab code? [In what way does being simple mean wearing slippers?] But sometimes, I’m also aware of it. When I attend events, I notice how well-groomed everyone is, and it makes me uncomfortable. Thus, in general, I try to avoid attending gatherings and meetings; apart from that, I feel at ease,” he said.

Vijay Sethupathi stated, “I think fans are fans and their love is so true,” in response to the fans’ unwavering support. It’s like an energy drink to get affection from followers. It gives you hope that your work has been seen and understood by others, especially when they are in love with you. I took it to mean that from the fan clubs. I always feel energized by it.

Sriram Raghavan’s Merry Christmas, which stars Katrina Kaif, will include Vijay Sethupathi. On January 12, the thriller, which was shot concurrently in Tamil and Hindi, will be released in theaters.
