This is Why Grandma Who Charges For The Family Christmas Meal Raises Prices

Grandmother Caroline Duddridge of Cardiff, Wales, has been billing her family for Christmas meals annually since 2015. According to a BBC article from the previous year, Caroline had her three children pay £10 (about INR 1000) and her two boys pay £15 (around INR 1500).

Compared to her daughters, who work part-time, she charges the former more since they are employed full-time. Additionally, she often charges her two three-year-old grandkids £2.50 (about INR 250) and her four grandchildren over the age of five £5 (roughly INR 500). Nevertheless, the BBC reports that she has increased her rates this year to reflect the “increased cost of living and rising food prices”.

“I have put the girls’ prices up [this year] by £2 because I did get a bit of stick from people saying I was being sexist – not that I listen to public opinion, particularly,” she said on BBC Radio 5 Live. She said, “I’m not sure it will [cover the cost], because when you buy a few bits and pieces it comes to like £30 or £40 and it’s barely a bag full.” Additionally, she described the price increase as “just horrifying”.

Caroline first had the notion after her spouse passed away in 2015, leaving her to survive on a smaller salary. At first, she had launched a “kitty jar” to which all of the family members were expected to make monthly contributions. Later, in an effort to be more convenient, she moved to direct bank account transfers.
“My friends think it’s a good idea, but there are some people who think I’m a bit of a Scrooge,” Caroline said to BBC Radio 5 Live. Meals are included in the price from Boxing Day to Christmas Eve. This consists of “a mini buffet of sandwiches, a turkey or nut roast dinner with all the trimmings on Christmas Day and a choice of four desserts, and a full buffet on December 26,” according to Metro.
