Study: Sclerostin is an essential protein for cardiovascular health in diabetic people

Significant new information on how sclerostin shields type 2 diabetic people against atherosclerosis has been made available by researchers.

Sclerostin has been identified as a protective component in vascular health, particularly in those with type 2 diabetes, according to a research published in the journal Cardiovascular Diabetology. Sclerostin is often associated with the control of bone growth.

According to the experts, atherosclerosis is a typical consequence of this condition that occurs when fats and cholesterol are deposited in the arteries. This leads to the creation of plaques that may restrict blood flow and raise the risk of catastrophic cardiovascular disorders.

139 individuals with type 2 diabetes (48 with cardiovascular disease and 91 without) and 121 controls were included in the research.

Sclerostin levels were shown to be considerably greater in individuals with type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, which may indicate a connection between this protein and atherosclerosis.

Sclerostin has also been shown to be beneficial in reducing arterial calcification, which is connected to the development of atherosclerosis.

In order to replicate the pathophysiological conditions of patients with type 2 diabetes, researchers from ibs.GRANADA, the San Cecilio University Hospital in Granada, the Carlos III Health Institute’s Center for Networked Biomedical Research on Frailty and Healthy Ageing (CIBERFES), and the University of Granada (UGR) performed “in vitro” experiments on vascular smooth muscle cells.

“They found that sclerostin overexpression reduced calcium deposits, decreased cell proliferation and inflammation, and promoted cell survival,” according to the research.
