A Polish man was detained over a suspected Russian plan to assassinate Zelenskyy in Ukraine

According to Polish authorities, a man was detained on suspicion of being prepared to spy for Russian military intelligence in an attempted assassination of Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the president of Ukraine.

The individual, known only as Pawel K. under Polish privacy regulations, was allegedly ready to provide Russian operatives with knowledge about airport security and was detained in Poland on Wednesday, according to a statement from the office of Poland’s National Prosecutor.

The man was hoping to get in touch with Russians who were actively engaged in the conflict in Ukraine. He also expected to provide specific information about the Rzeszow-Jasionka airport, which is the entry point for supplies of military hardware and humanitarian aid into Ukraine and is located in southeast Poland, close to the Ukrainian border. Additionally, it facilitates the entry and exit of politicians and leaders from Ukraine. US forces are in charge of the airport.

According to the statement, the individual may spend up to eight years in jail if found guilty.

Prosecutors said that tight collaboration with the Ukrainian prosecutors and security services—who alerted them and supplied vital evidence—was the reason for the arrest. They said that the situation is evolving.

Two German-Russian men were detained on suspicion of spying in Germany on Thursday, according to prosecutors. One of the men is said to have agreed to carry out assaults on possible targets, such as US military installations, with the intention of undermining help for Ukraine.

According to German privacy regulations, the two were only named as Dieter S. and Alexander J.; they were taken into custody on Wednesday in the Bavarian city of Bayreuth, according to German federal prosecutors.

Since Moscow began its assault on Ukraine in February 2022, a number of persons, including a dual Spanish and Russian citizen, have been detained in Poland on suspicion of espionage for Russia.
