An Iranian man is detained in Peru on charges of plotting to attack a citizen of Israel

LIMA: On Friday, Peruvian police reported the arrest of an Iranian national who was allegedly affiliated with Iran’s Quds Force and had plotted to murder an Israeli resident in the South American nation. At a news briefing, Peru’s top police officer, Gen. Oscar Arriola, said that two Peruvian nationals and 56-year-old Majid Azizi were taken into custody in Lima on Thursday.

Authorities, according to Arriola, stopped the Israeli onslaught. For security purposes, he did not reveal who the intended victim was. According to him, police are still searching for a third Peruvian who they believe to be the mastermind behind the plan to murder the Israeli.
Arriola said that foreign intelligence services had notified them of Azizi’s arrival in Lima on March 3.
Whether Azizi is a Quds Force member could not be independently verified by the Associated Press. Iranian official media did not report the arrest early on Saturday, and Iranian authorities remained silent.
Iran has previously conducted intelligence operations in South America, mainly via its paramilitary Revolutionary Guard’s expeditionary Quds, or Jerusalem, Force.
Iran and Venezuela are closely connected. Following its discovery in Argentina, the United States confiscated a Boeing 747 that was associated with the Quds Force. Most infamously, Argentina maintains that Iran was responsible for the bombing of a Jewish center in 1994, which claimed 85 lives.
For the first time, the arrest of an accused member of that gang has been made public by Peruvian police.
Arriola said that Azizi was apprehended subsequent to taking out cash from an ATM. He, along with the other two Peruvians detained, would be incarcerated for a first 15 days on allegations related to terrorism.
According to the general, the individual planned to leave for Iran on the same day that he was apprehended.
He also said that Azizi is wed to a Peruvian lady.
