As the UAE recovers from record-breaking rainfall, long-haul airline Emirates once again suspends local flight check-in

United Arab Emirates, DUBAI: As the United Arab Emirates as a whole works to recover from this week’s record-breaking rainfall, long-haul airline Emirates said on Friday that it will once again suspend local check-in for customers flying on its flights.

According to Emirates, the order will be fulfilled throughout the day and into early Saturday.

The airline posted on social media site X, saying, “This is to support operations recovery from the recent bad weather at our Dubai hub.”

There were also some issues with low-cost airline FlyDubai. The CEO of Dubai International Airport, the biggest airport for international travel, told The Associated Press late Thursday that the airport intended to resume regular operations within 24 hours.

The UAE, an authoritarian country on the Arabian Peninsula controlled by hereditary families, has an arid desert environment with minimal rainfall on average. But a big storm that experts had been predicting for days blasted over all seven sheikhdoms in the nation.

Over 142 millimeters (5.59 inches) of rain fell over Dubai in a single day at Tuesday’s conclusion. At Dubai International Airport, 94.7 millimeters (3.73 inches) of rain fall there annually on average. There was considerably greater precipitation in other parts of the nation.

In the meanwhile, neighboring Oman has also recently experienced severe flooding. Authorities increased the number of fatalities from those storms to at least 21 on Thursday.
