Building in Brazil Reduced to Rubble Following Heavy Rains; 8 Dead; 5 Missing

Five people are still missing after an apartment building collapsed in northern Brazil on Friday, according to authorities.

An 8-year-old and a 5-year-old were among the dead, along with two tiny toddlers. Rescue personnel are sifting through the debris in search of survivors.

The four-story apartment complex in northern Pernambuco state, Brazil, was reduced to rubble in videos posted on social media.

Three individuals have been successfully rescued by fire personnel, and they are still looking for others. Authorities in the area indicated that there were ten persons in the wreckage.

However, it was not immediately apparent what had caused the fall, which had happened on Friday early when many locals were still asleep.

The building’s former occupants claim that they were forcibly removed by the police back in 2009, but others have since moved in.
