China claims that the US is planning suppressive measures despite their improved ties

China’s foreign ministry chastised the Biden administration for adding more Chinese firms to its sanctions lists and accused the United States on Thursday of planning strategies to stifle China’s ascent.

Speaking to the media at the Chinese legislature’s annual conference, Wang Yi said that while Presidents Xi Jinping and Joe Biden’s meeting in November had strengthened China’s ties with the United States, America had not lived up to its commitments.

“Where is the United States’ credibility as a great power when it consistently says one thing and does another? “Where is the U.S. confidence as a major power when it becomes tense and anxious at the mere mention of China?” he said. “If the U.S. is obsessed with suppressing China, it will eventually harm itself.”

Wang, a 70-year-old seasoned diplomat who has gained Xi’s confidence, took back the position of foreign minister last summer after the unexpected and unexplained dismissal of his replacement, Qin Gang, after a half-year tenure. In addition, Wang has the most senior post in the governing Communist Party’s foreign affairs department. This role was given to him when Qin was appointed foreign minister at the end of 2022.

Wang also restated the Chinese demand that Palestine be admitted as a full member of the UN.

Experts had conjectured that the Communist Party may use the week-long National People’s Congress to choose a new foreign minister; however, that idea seemed to be abandoned when an agenda that was made public on the eve of the first session excluded any mention of personnel adjustments.

Does the US overestimate China’s influence?
According to Chinese media sources, China’s U.N. envoy, Zhang Jun, said in a January Security Council discussion that China favors Palestine’s early admission as a full member as a first step toward establishing a Palestinian state.

Wang had a significant international conference call on Thursday in order to develop a schedule and road map for a two-state solution. “We support Palestine becoming a full member of the United Nations and call on individual members of the Security Council not to set obstacles for this any more,” he said.

Without naming it specifically, he said that the US was inciting unrest in Taiwan and the South China Sea. China is at conflict with the Philippines, Vietnam, and other countries in Southeast Asia because it claims a large portion of the South China Sea and claims self-governing Taiwan as part of its territory.

China has been accused by the Philippines and the United States of using coercive methods to prevent Philippine ships from accessing reefs and other outcroppings that are claimed by both countries. last was most recently seen last week when coast guard boats from the two nations collided.

“For unreasonable provocations, we will take just countermeasures,” Wang said. “We also advise certain countries outside the region not to stir up trouble, choose sides, and not to become disruptors and troublemakers in the South China Sea.”

According to him, nations that prioritize preserving formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan are meddling in China’s internal affairs. The majority of nations, including the US, do not have diplomatic links with Taiwan; yet, China takes issue with US legislators visiting the island and US military equipment being sold to it for defense.

Wang said that China would keep pushing for Taiwan’s peaceful reunification, but he also issued a warning to anybody who backs Taiwan’s independence: there will be consequences. In order to avoid upsetting China, the majority of Taiwanese would rather stay independent. They worry that, especially in light of China’s recent crackdown on Hong Kong, Chinese authority may jeopardize their democratic and liberated rights.

Wang said, “Our bottom line is also very clear.” “That is Taiwan will never be allowed to split from the motherland.”

Wang applauded China’s strengthening relations with Russia, pointing out that last year’s commerce between the two exceeded a goal of $200 million by the end of 2024, reaching $240 billion.

China is allegedly providing Russia with an economic lifeline at a time when the US and EU are attempting to apply sanctions on its government in response to its invasion of Ukraine in 2022, which set off a catastrophic conflict that has lasted for more than two years.

“Russian natural gas has entered thousands of households in China, and Chinese cars are driving in the streets of Russia, which fully demonstrates the strong resilience and broad prospects of mutually beneficial cooperation,” Wang said.

According to a Polish official statement, China should not get political, economic, or military help from Poland’s deputy foreign minister, Wladyslaw Bartoszewsk, who informed the ambassador. During a meeting with Li Hui, a Chinese diplomatic envoy who is touring various European nations this week to discuss the crisis, Bartoszewsk made the statement on Wednesday.

Two weeks ago, the United States and the European Union tightened penalties on Chinese and other nationals and businesses for allegedly supporting Russia’s military campaign.
