Delhi in Dili: Building ASEAN ties while opening an embassy in Timor-Leste

The decision to establish an Indian embassy in Timor-Leste was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday.

While co-chairing the biennial ASEAN-India summit in the Indonesian capital, Modi made the announcement. The decision to open an Indian Embassy in Dili, Timor-Leste, was announced by the prime minister during the ASEAN-India summit, according to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). According to the statement, “the choice is a reflection of the importance India accords to ASEAN and its relations with Timor Leste.”

According to the MEA, Timor Leste and ASEAN members applauded the decision. Timor Leste first became an observer member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in 2022.

India and numerous other nations, including the US, China, Japan, and Australia, are its discussion partners. ASEAN is regarded as one of the most prominent groups in the area.
