If the PML-N wins the votes, Nawaz Sharif will become prime minister of Pakistan: Shehbaz

In the event that his party secures a majority in the legislative elections, Shehbaz Sharif, the former prime minister of Pakistan, said on Wednesday that his older brother, Nawaz Sharif, will take over as prime minister. However, he said that in the event of a split mandate, discussions with coalition partners will take place before choosing a new leader.

In an interview with Geo News, Shehbaz—who also serves as president of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N)—made the remarks.

Who would be the future prime minister, he was asked? “If we get a simple majority, Wawz Sharif will serve as prime minister. However, the choice will be taken after discussions with coalition partners in the event of a split mandate,” he said.

Shehbaz was also questioned whether he would rather take over as prime minister rather than giving his brother the position, since he would not be able to carry out his duties effectively given his elderly age and health problems.

“I’ll respond to this question the same way I’ve responded to dictators on several occasions: Nawaz Sharif is my prime minister and leader,” he said. Shehbaz has already disclosed in many interviews that he was often given the chance to succeed his brother as prime minister by the influential establishment, but he always turned down the offer.

It’s possible that Shehbaz made the offer since he has always had good relations with the establishment. Shehbaz headed the coalition government of over twelve parties that was formed after Imran Khan’s ouster in April 2022. He governed with ease and maintained the coalition for 16 months, until the parliament’s tenure ended in August.
