The incident happened when the Royal Malaysian Navy was practicing for a parade. Social media videos showed the impact at the Lumut Naval Base at that very time.

All ten crew men on board the aircraft involved in the disaster have been confirmed dead by the Navy.

The disaster was caused by one helicopter striking the rotor of another, as seen in the widely shared video of the collision and the crash. Two helicopters crashed, one into a swimming pool nearby and the other into a jogging track.

Ten persons lost their lives in the Lumut, Perak disaster, the Perak fire and rescue service revealed to the Malaysian Free Press.

According to the department, around 9:50 a.m., it received a report about a helicopter issue at the Lumut Royal Malaysian Navy stadium in Manjung, Perak. They claimed that the deceased’s remains are still being retrieved.

In a statement, the Royal Malaysian Navy also reported that around 9:32 a.m. local time, two helicopters—identified as the types HOM (M503-3) and Fennec (M502-6)—collision and crashed. According to them, the helicopters were practicing for the Navy’s 90th anniversary celebration, which is set for May 3–5.

They said that three passengers were on board the Fennec (M502-6) and that seven others were being transported by the HOM (M503-3) helicopter.

“Every victim was pronounced dead on the spot and was then taken to the military hospital at the Lumut Royal Malaysian Navy Base for identification,” the official announcement said.

The country’s navy said that an inquiry committee is being formed to look into the occurrence.
